Sudden Death of Mr. Alfred Hodgkinson
I find the following most interesting, as it reports the death of Mr. Alfred Hodgkinson, coroner for Tottenham and East Middlesex. Hodgkinson was appointed coroner of East Middlesex upon the death of Mr. Roderick Macdonald. He died suddenly at his home after holding a full day of inquests.
A CORONER'S SUDDEN DEATH.
Mr. Alfred Hodgkinson, coroner for Tottenham and other districts of Middlesex, died suddenly at his residence, at High-road, Tottenham, on Tuesday night. He was in practice as a solicitor, and had been at business during the day, and had also held several inquests in the morning.
Mr. Hodgkinson had some fourteen year's experience of coroner's work. For four years he acted as deputy to the late Mr. Macdonald for East Middlesex. On Mr. Macdonald's decease he succeeded him as coroner, his duties extending over a wide district, which included Tottenham, Enfield, Potter's Bar, Wood-green, and Southgate. Less than three years ago Mr. Hodgkinson was appointed coroner to the Duchy of Lancaster, and held the two offices together. Before he was appointed coroner for East Middlesex Mr. Hodgkinson did a good deal of work in East London, and conducted the inquests in three of the "Jack the Ripper" murder cases. A year or two later he held inquests on 23 victims of a railway accident at Bishopsgate.
A well known Freemason, Mr. Hodgkinson, was a past master of the Eleanor Lodge. He leaves a widow with one son and five daughters. The funeral will take place on Saturday at Tottenham Cemetery.
