Warren's Despotism
SCOTLAND YARD MANAGEMENT.
ALLEGED DESPOTISM OF SIR CHARLES WARREN.
LONDON, Aug. 31 - The Metropolitan Police force of London is about to lose some of its most efficient officers, owing to the management of Scotland Yard, the police headquarters. Sir Charles Warren, Chief Commissioner, will be remembered for his peremptory commands during the Trafalgar square riots. He is charged by his fellow officers with exercising his powers with too high a hand, and making it impossible for them to serve under him. They complain that he is an autocrat, and declare that he is rapidly destroying the efficiency of the service. Assistant Commissioner Jas. Monroe has already resigned, and others will shortly do so. Mr. Monroe is one of the ablest men attached to Scotland Yard, and it was through his untiring efforts that the various plots of dynamiters during the Jubilee celebration and at other times were foiled. There is much feeling about the retiring of the officers, and it is not improbable that the Home Secretary may find that Sir Charles Warren is more available in some other position.
