Tumblety Not the Man
THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS.
"DR." TUMBLETY ARRESTED.
Dr. Tumblety, of New York, a notorious quack, who made himself very conspicuous in Montreal nearly thirty years ago, and who, during his peregrinations in the Maritime Provinces, caused the death by malpractice of a locomotive engineer, for which he was indicted for manslaughter, has been arrested in London on suspicion of being connected with the Whitechapel murders. He could not be held on suspicion, but the police succeeded in getting him held under the special law passed soon after the "Modern Babylon" exposures. The "doctor" is a very bad quack and eccentric dresser, but is not the man for performing such terrible work as that done by the Whitechapel monster.
THE MALAY COOK THEORY.
AUSTIN, TEX., Nov. 18. - The despatches about the Whitechapel murders in London, calling attention to the fact that a Malay cook on a steamer was suspected, has set detective circles here all agog. During the bloody butchery of women in this city three years ago there was a Malay cook at work in a cheap boarding house in the vicinity of which two of the bloodiest of all the terrible assassinations occurred. On Christmas Eve, 1885, two women were murdered and horribly cut and slashed. One was just two blocks from the boarding house where the Malay cooked. He was strongly suspected, and was shadowed by detectives for two or three days, when he suddenly disappeared and has not been seen or heard of since. Detectives here think it is possible he has drifted to Europe, and is the "Ripper."
