THE LATE ATROCITIES IN WHITECHAPEL.
[BY SUBMARINE CABLE.]

[From our own Correspondent.]
THE SUSPECT AT TUNIS.

LONDON, January 28.

The authorities at Scotland Yard have received further confirmation of the intelligence that was forwarded in reply to their telegraphic messages to the Government of Tunis, when the rumor was spread of the capture of "Jack the Ripper" with a band of Tunisian robbers. It is intimated that the suspected Englishman, Gray, is wholly unconnected with the Whitechapel murders. The mistake upon which the rumor was founded arose from the extraordinary resemblance of Gray in face and figure to the description which had been given of the Whitechapel murderer.

THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS.

It has now been definitely ascertained that the Englishman named Gray who was arrested at Tunis on suspicion of being "Jack the Ripper" is not in any way connected with the Whitechapel outrages.

TERROR IN CORUNNA.
DISAPPEARANCE OF TWO GIRLS.

ATTRIBUTED TO THE WHITECHAPEL MISCREANT.

Great excitement prevails at Corunna. It has been caused by the sudden disappearance of two girls - the elder of whom is only seventeen - both of whom are supposed to have been murdered by the person who committed the outrages in the East-end of London. The people of Corunna affirm - so the Correspondent of a morning contemporary says - that the Whitechapel murderer reached the town on the 17th inst., and that he has been prowling about the place after dark ever since his arrival. Young women and girls no longer go out at night, and even have their doors barricaded, to keep out the mysterious assassin. It is also reported that the Whitechapel ruffian has written one of his customary coldblooded epistles to the authorities, telling them that he is going his rounds, and that he means to disembowel several "ladies" before he leaves Corunna.

MORE ABOUT THE TUNIS ARREST.

Some more particulars regarding the arrest and detention of the man Alfred Gray on suspicion of being the Whitechapel murderer are telegraphed from Tunis. It appears that Gray, who is stated to be 24 years of age, was examined by the British Consul, and that his statements were of a most contradictory character. A woman who arrived at Tunis with him was also interrogated, and declared that she had been in London, where she lived "behind the high steeple in Whitechapel." A box in their possession was searched, and among some wearing apparel a razor was found, which the woman asserted was used by Gray for shaving. The woman is of Italian nationality, but speaks English fluently. The contradictory statements of Gray and the woman, as well as the former's similarity to the descriptions of the supposed assassin published in the London Press, excited the suspicions of the authorities, and in consequence the British Consul sent telegraphic and detailed information on the subject to the Foreign Office. Gray is tattoed on the chest and back with different emblems. Both arms are also tattoed, one bearing the figure of a woman, and the other representations of guns and ropes, with the letters M and P, which he declares stood for "Mary" and "Polly," two women whom he formerly knew.
