PAUPER BEDS AND CHILD SUFFOCATION.

Mr. Baxter held an inquest yesterday on the body of Kate Brooks, aged six weeks, the illegitimate child of Elizabeth Brooks, a domestic servant, at present an inmate of the Shoreditch workhouse. The evidence showed that on Tuesday morning the mother awoke to find the child, who was well the night before, dead by her side. Dr. Toogood, medical officer, ascribed death to suffocation by overlaying, and the jury returned a verdict to that effect. This is the second case of fatal overlaying that has occurred in the same union during the past week, and it appears that the beds in which both parent and child sleep are under 36 inches in width. The clerk of the board attended the inquest to represent the guardians, and it is expected that some action will be taken to have the beds made wider, or else have a separate bed for the children.
