More Missing Girls

Rosina Mary Brown

MISSING.

Mrs. Ingram, of 18, St. Dunstan's-road, Mile-end, and Mrs. Mansfield, of 24, Wilson-street, Burdett-road, stated at the Thames police-court, on Friday, that their sons, Walter Mansfield, aged 13, and William Ingram, aged 15, had been missing for three weeks. They had been in the employ of a man who travelled about selling fire ornaments, and they ran away from him in Bradford three weeks ago. The applicants believed they made for London, but nothing had been heard of them. The description of Mansfield was as follows: - Height, about 4ft. 10in.; fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes; was dressed in tweed vest and jacket, corduroy trowsers, striped coloured shirt, lace boots, and round felt hat. His right leg was very much scarred, and on the right side of his neck was a strawberry mark. The other lad was a little shorter than Mansfield; fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes; was dressed in drab speckled jacket and vest, corduroy trowsers, "butterfly" cap, and lace boots.
A Mrs. Brown, of 18, West-street, Mile-end, stated to Mr. Lushington, at the Thames police-court, yesterday, that her daughter, Rosina Mary Brown, aged 14, had been missing since the 27th of Sept. On that day she left her situation in St. Peter's-street to take some clothes to the mangling woman. She delivered the clothes, but had not since been seen or heard of. Her description was as follows: - Height, about 5ft. 5in.; fair complexion; light hair, blue eyes. Was dressed in long, dark green jacket, brown skirt, green bodice, plain leather boots, and white straw hat, trimmed with plum-coloured velvet, and gold earrings.

Mary Heath and Mary Yockal

MISSING.

A respectable working man applied at Southwark police-court, on Monday, for assistance to recover his wife, who had been missing since February 8. Her name is Mary Heath, and she is aged 60. Her description is as follows: - Height, 5ft. 5in. or 5ft. 6in.; hair, light brown turning to grey; has one long tooth in front, small brown eyes and oval face, small white mole on left cheek, and slight scar on left eyebrow; of medium build and fair complexion.
At the Thames police-court on Wednesday Mrs. Yockal, of 36, Providence-street, Commercial-road, stated that her daughter, Mary Yockal, aged 15, had been missing for a month. Her description was as follows: - Height, 5ft.; complexion fair, light hair and blue eyes. Was dressed in brown woollen dress, long black jacket, black straw hat with red feather, lace-up boots, violet stockings, and white scarf.

Miss Cummings, daughter of James Cummings

MISSING.

A respectable-looking man named James Cummings, of 43, Newton-road, Westbourne-grove, applied at Marylebone police-court, on Thursday, with regard to his daughter, who had been missing since the 13th inst. He described her as 12-1/2 years of age, and 4ft. 3in. in height. She was of fair complexion, with blue eyes and dark brown hair, and had a mole on her left shoulder-blade. She was attired in a blue stuff dress, trimmed with velvet, a jacket trimmed with red flannel and astrachan, lace boots, and sealskin hat.

Selina Frost

MISSING.

At the Thames police-court, on Thursday, Mrs. Sarah Frost, of 34, Aberfeldie-street, Poplar, stated that her daughter, Selina, aged 14, had been missing since Monday from the service of Mr. C. Wheeley, of 11, Vicarage-place, East Margate. It is believed the girl had no money at the time she left the house. She was under notice to leave, and did not like the idea of having to return home. The girl was tall for her age, with dark eyes and light hair, and was dressed in dark straw hat, trimmed with brown, light jacket, dark woollen shawl, blue striped dress, white linen apron, dark woollen stockings, and strong, lace-up boots.

Charlotte Morris

The body of a young woman, named Charlotte Morris who had been missing since she left chapel, has been found in the Ecclesbourne Brook, at Duffield, near Derby. On leaving chapel, she took a road running by the side of the brook, which was much swollen with recent rains. It is thought that in the darkness she walked into the water.

Hannah Prosser

SUPPOSED MURDER IN WALES.

The body of a young woman named Hannah Prosser, daughter of a blacksmith at Llansamlet, who had been missing since November 3, has been found in the canal four miles from Swansea with wounds on the head. There are marks of strangulation about the young woman's neck.

MISSING.

A distressed mother (Mrs. Davison) writes to us from Howard-street, Florence, Longton, Staffordshire, stating that her daughter by her first husband, Ann Burrowes, a general servant in Longton, has been missing since May 5. She was between 16 and 17, and is described as follows: - About 5ft. in height, stiff built, first joint of forefinger of right hand taken off, burn marks on her right side, breast, and arm; of ruddy complexion, eyes light blue, dark dress, black straw hat, green and black shawl, underneath short black jacket, braided, and lace-up boots.

Rebecca Graynell

MISSING.

A respectably-dressed female stated at Marylebone police-court on Monday that a cousin of hers, named Rebecca Graynell, aged 16, of 17, Adam-street, Portman-square, had been missing since the previous Thursday. She was dressed in a black jacket, cotton dress, black round hat, lace boots, and dark-coloured stockings. She was about 5ft. in height, of fair complexion and hair, and light blue eyes. The girl comes from Norfolk, and speaks with a provincial dialect.

Woman named Warren

FORSAKEN BY HER SWEETHEART.

The body of a young woman named Warren was found this afternoon in some ornamental water at Chard. The deceased, it is said, was given up by her sweetheart, and this greatly preyed upon her mind. She has been missing since November, and the body was much decomposed.

Caroline Perrins

MISSING.

A well-dressed woman applied to the magistrate, at Wandsworth police-court, on Saturday, for his advice, stating that her husband, Henry Brunning, a bootmaker, of 11, The Platt, Putney, left home on the 8th inst. in consequence of monetary difficulties, and had not since been heard of. He was dressed in a dark tweed suit; his age was 40, and he wore a beard, without hair on the upper lip. The gaoler said the wife had eight children.
Mr. Paget: How came he to leave you?
The Applicant: He was pressed for a doctor's bill.
A Mr. Thomas Perrins, of 4, Thomas-street, Devonport-street, Commercial-road, stated at the Thames police-court, on Thursday, that his daughter, Caroline Perrins, aged 17, had been missing since the 15th inst. On that day she left home for the purpose of attending a Mr. Hurlich's singing class in Montague-street, Whitechapel-road, but she never reached there, and had not since been seen or heard of. Her description was as follows: - Height 5ft.; light auburn hair, cut short at the back of the head, and with fringe in front; light hazel eyes. Was dressed in plain black dress, short black astrachan jacket, dark red plush hat, with feathers to match, new laced boots, with patent fronts, black gloves, and long pink knitted cloud.

Mary Woolgar

MISSING.

Mrs. Woolgar, of 27, St. Thomas's-road, Mile-end, applied at the Thames police-court on Tuesday for publicity respecting the disappearance of her daughter, Mary Woolgar, aged 20, who had been missing since the previous Thursday. On the evening of that day she left home, having previously said, "Good bye" to her little brother, saying she was going to drown herself. Her description was as follows: - Height, 5ft. 2in.; fair complexion, dark brown hair, and dark eyes; she had a blister mark on the back of her neck, she was dressed in a brown skirt, black cloth jacket, drab woollen shawl, white straw hat, and springside boots, one being very old.
It was stated at Greenwich police-court, on Friday that Mr. Alexander Lindsay had left his office, in the City, about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, and had not been heard of since. His friends know of nothing to account for his disappearance. From his known tastes, it is supposed that he may be walking through the country, from village to village, or round the coast.

Miss Watson Lyall

A MISSING YOUNG LADY.

There is no longer any mystery about the missing young lady, Miss Watson Lyall, at North Berwick. Unhappily, it has been discovered beyond doubt that she had fallen over some of the rocky ledges near the harbour into the sea. Her body has not yet been found, although every effort is being made by able and willing hands to recover it. Her hat was found in the water on the day of the sad occurrence, and her handkerchief a day later near the same place, so that there is, unfortunately, no doubt as to her fate, which is all the more melancholy as she was to have been married in a few weeks to Mr. Wycliffe Taylor, the only son of the late well-known author, Mr. Tom Taylor, and was to have gone on a visit to his uncle, the Rev. Mr. Kingsley, at Kilvington Rectory, Yorkshire, in a few days, prior to returning to London.

Agnes Bird

MISSING.

It was announced at Clerkenwell police-court on Wednesday that a boy named Edward Buckingham, aged 11 years, had been missing from his home - 41, North-block, Peabody-buildings, Islington - since last Wednesday. Mr. Barstow said the Press would perhaps give publicity to the application. The boy was described as of very fair complexion, with blue eyes. When he left his home he was wearing a black coat, plaid waistcoat, tweed trowsers, lace boots, and white socks.
An application was made at Marylebone police-court, on Thursday, by Mrs. Angus, 34, John-street, Portland-town, with regard to her son Robert, aged 15, who worked in Regent-street, and had been missing since the 21st September. She described him as being about 5ft. in height, with dark complexion and dark brown eyes and hair. He was wearing a light jacket and black diagonal vest and dark trowsers, black and white scarf, and low laced shoes.
A ladylike-looking person applied to Mr. Shiel, at Southwark police-court yesterday, to assist her in finding her husband. She said his name was Edward Norman, 41 years of age. A month since he left his home, 28, Trinity-street, Borough, to attend to his duties as clerk to Messrs. Martin Wells and Co., builders, at Whitechapel, and had not been heard of since. He is of medium height, has a fair moustache, dark brown eyes and hair (inclined to curl), and was wearing black coat and tweed trowsers.
At the Thames police-court, yesterday, Alfred Bird, of 84, High-street, Bromley, gave information of the disappearance of his wife, Agnes Bird, who had been missing since the 30th September. On that day she left home for the purpose of going to see her mother, but she never arrived there, and had not since been heard of. Her description was as follows: - Age 43, height 5ft. 7in., complexion fair, grey eyes, brown hair, very red face. Was dressed in large diagonal dolman, trimmed with braid; black skirt, trimmed with crape; black jersey bodice, trimmed with braid, blue underskirt, with white spots; quilted black petticoat, black stockings, new button boots, and black crape bonnet, trimmed with beads. Wedding and keeper rings on left hand, and small gold knobs in ears.
Application was made yesterday at Worship-street police-court by two respectable-looking women, each of whom had lost a son. In the first case a lad named Arthur Chase, 16 years and six months old, had disappeared from his home on Sept. 22. The lad was engaged at a floorcloth factory at Tottenham, and left on the morning of the day in question to go to his place. The mother, who lives at 8, Laurel-terrace, Park-lane, Tottenham, described the lad as 5ft. in height, fair complexion, with blue eyes, and his working clothes were much marked with paint. - The other applicant, Mrs. Weedon, said that her son, not yet 16 years of age, had been in the Home for Little Boys, Farmingham, Kent, and absconded from there on the 10th September. His height was about 4ft. 6in., and he was of fair complexion, with blue eyes, and was wearing the school clothing.

Unknown woman

SUPPOSED MURDER IN LIMERICK.

At Hospital, County Limerick, yesterday, a man while ploughing came on the body of a young woman in an advanced state of decomposition, her throat having been cut from ear to ear. The deceased was identified as a servant girl, who had been employed by the owner of the land where she was found. She had been missing since Christmas Eve, when she drew her wages (9 pounds), and left to visit her parents in Kerry. She was accompanied by a farm servant, who also belonged to Kerry, and was supposed to be returning home. This man has not since been heard of.

A domestic servant and Emma Potter

SINGULAR ELOPEMENT.

A mounted constable of the K division, stationed at Poplar, is reported missing from his duties. A young woman, a domestic servant in the employ of a local tradesman, is also found to have disappeared, together with 60 pounds from her master's cash-box. As the constable was known to have been on intimate terms with the missing servant, inquiries were made which leave no doubt that the two have eloped together. The constable told a friend that he intended proceeding to India with his lady-love, but it is confidently anticipated that both he and the young woman accompanying him will be called upon to give an explanation of their conduct before they reach that distant country. The policeman managed to square up accounts with the authorities, at least satisfactorily to himself, before going away, for on Wednesday afternoon he went to the police-station in his stable clothes and drew the whole of his pay. He has left his uniform behind him, but the stable clothing is missing, and when he is caught he will doubtless be charged with stealing it, in addition to being concerned in the robbery of the 60 pounds.
Inspector Bridgeman, K division, obtained a warrant at the Thames police-court, yesterday morning, on behalf of the Commissioners of Police, for the arrest of the constable.

A MISSING YOUNG WOMAN.

A Mrs. Potter, living in Spencer-buildings, Westminster, in considerable distress of mind applied to Mr. D'Eyncourt, at the Westminster police-court, on Thursday, stating that she had reason to fear that the arm found in the river off Grosvenor-road belonged to her daughter Emma, a girl 17 years of age, of rather weak intellect, who had been missing from home since Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. Her daughter had given her some trouble by going in the streets at night. - Mr. D'Eyncourt said he could only refer the applicant to the Press and the police.
Inspector Webber, A division, attended before the magistrate at Westminster police-court on Friday, and stated that the police on the previous night found and took home the girl Emma Potter.

Margaret Chambers

A MOTHER AND TWO CHILDREN MISSING.

A man named Arthur Chambers, residing at 97, Drury-lane, applied to Mr. Bridge for advice as to his wife and two daughters, who had been missing since the last Saturday in August last. The following is a description of the missing family: - The mother, Margaret Chambers, a native of Ireland, is 40 years old, of slight build, with dark brown hair, and a cast in her eye, and dressed in black. The eldest daughter Lenore, is eight years of age, with light hair cut rather short, and large blue eyes, dressed in coarse white straw bonnet trimmed with red, dark plaid frock, and laced boots. The younger child, Beatrice, is twenty months old, unable to walk or speak, but cries continually. - The Magistrate referred the applicant to the Press.

Ellen Minall

MISSING.

Yesterday a respectable looking woman applied to Mr. Bushby, at Worship-street, for assistance in giving publicity to the fact that her husband, Herbert Brooker, had been missing from his home, 84, Eleanor-road, Hackney, since Monday. He had been employed as a porter at the Broad-street goods station, and on Monday, at 11 o'clock in the morning, he left home, as usual, to go to his work, but did not arrive there. The missing man was described as being 26 years of age, of medium height, and rather fair. He was wearing dark tweed trowsers and brown overcoat.
At Lambeth police-court, on Monday, a young woman applied with regard to the disappearance of her brother, Daniel Thomas Ring, aged 34, a carpenter. She said he left his home in Bowling-green-street, Kennington, on Friday, the 31st ult., and proceeded to the Postal Telegraph works, Southwark-bridge-road, where he worked. He remained there until about eight o'clock, when he left. He had not since been heard of. The missing man was 5ft. 5in. high, dark complexion, dark moustache, fresh colour. He was dressed in light clothing, lace-up boots, felt hat (maker's name Clark). It was stated that he was to have been married on Saturday.
Application was made at Worship-street on Tuesday by a respectable-looking young man for publicity of the fact that his mother, Elizabeth Brisley, of Windsor-road, Hackney, had been missing since Thursday, the 30th ult. She was 52 years of age, and recently widowed, her spirits being low. Her complexion was dark, with her hair turning grey. She was described as 5ft. 2in. in height.
At the Thames police-court, on Tuesday, Mr. George Pheasant, of 49, Lockley-street, Burdett-road, applied to Mr. Saunders respecting the disappearance of his servant, Ellen Minall, aged 17, who had been missing since Monday. On that day she left his house for the purpose of going to church, but had not since been heard of. Her description is as follows: - Height, 5ft. 6in.; complexion, fair; was dressed in brown velvet dress, trimmed with brown velvet; short black jacket, trimmed with astrachan; brown cotton gloves; white silk tie; black turban hat, trimmed with astrachan; and high lace-up boots.

Florence/Frances Annie Hancock

A THAMES MYSTERY.

Mr. Baxter resumed an inquiry on Monday, at the Vestry Hall, High-street, Shadwell, into the circumstances attending the death of Florence Annie Hancock, aged 26, lately residing in Pulross-street, Brixton, whose body was found in the Thames, off Wapping, on the 9th inst. George Hancock, a carpenter, on a photograph of the deceased being handed to him, identified it as that of his wife, who left him two years ago. He had not seen her since she left him. Alice Land stated that she was a servant in the employ of the deceased. On Oct. 22 deceased left the house, saying she was going to meet a friend at Liverpool-street. She never returned. The friend referred to used to call at the house once a week, generally on the Wednesday evening. He called last on the Thursday before deceased was missing, and again last Monday. Witness did not become alarmed when her mistress did not return, as she thought she had perhaps gone away for a holiday. When Mr. Pain called last Monday he asked for "Florrie." When told that she was missing he said: "I shall be at Liverpool Station on Wednesday; meet me there and tell me all about it." Witness met him and told him that the deceased had been found drowned in the river. He seemed much upset. Beatrice Williams, a widow, said she identified the photographs as those of a friend of hers. On Monday, October 22, witness met her at Charing-cross, and had a drink with her in the Northumberland. They were there at twenty-five minutes to twelve, when witness left to catch the train. The deceased was then in the company of a strange gentleman. She had had a little drink, but knew what she was doing. She was a girl of a most lively disposition, and would not be likely to commit suicide. When witness left her she had a small gold chain, which was attached to her brooch round her neck. Early in the evening deceased had told witness that she had seen her friend, who allowed her 5 pounds a week, and that she had had a few words with him, but she said "I received my money just the same." Deceased had some money, and asked witness to go home with her, but she refused. The chain produced was not the one deceased had round her neck when witness left her. The gentleman deceased was with was a tall, fair man with heavy moustache. Mr. J. Pain deposed that he knew the deceased. He had not made her any allowance. He had known her for three years, and last saw her alive on the 22nd of October at Broad-street Station. There was no disagreement between them; in fact, witness told her he might see her on the Wednesday following. Deceased used to meet him at different times. It was incorrect to say that he allowed her 5 pound a week. The last time he saw her she was in her usual spirits. He had not complained of her conduct with other men, although he had seen her with one or two. He gave her no money on that occasion. On the 22nd she left him at 20 minutes past five o'clock, and he did not see her alive again. He had no reason to believe she would commit suicide. On the Wednesday following his parting with the deceased he left London for the Lake District, and afterwards went to the Isle of Man and Ireland, and only returned on the 7th inst. On one or two occasions the deceased had said she wished she were dead. Mr. M'Coy, divisional surgeon, who made a post-mortem examination of the body, said that there were no marks of external violence. The body had been in the water fully a fortnight, and perhaps more. The organs were generally healthy. She was not enceinte. The cause of death was asphyxia from drowning. Inspector Francis, of the Thames Police, stated that every inquiry had been made in the hope of discovering how the woman came into the water, but without result. No one saw her after Beatrice Williams left her on Monday, Oct. 22. The jury returned a verdict "That the deceased was found drowned, but how she came into the water there was not sufficient evidence to show."

A BRIXTON GIRL'S DEATH.
FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED.

MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR.

A reporter writes this morning: - On Friday last, William Wood, a waterman, was in his boat off Wapping-stairs, when he noticed the body of a woman, dressed in superior clothing, floating down the river. He secured the body, and took it ashore. The police were then communicated with, and the body was removed to the mortuary. It was fully dressed, with the exception of the hat and boots, which were missing. Inquiries were at once set on foot by the police, and it was then found that the body was that of Frances Annie Hancock, who had been missing since the 21st of October. On that day she was seen walking along the Strand in company with a tall, fair gentleman, with a heavy moustache. She was wearing a gold necklace. That was the last time she was seen alive. When the body was recovered the necklace was missing. Deceased resided at Prusom-street, Brixton. At an inquiry held by Mr. Wynne E. Baxter, Coroner for the South-Eastern Division of Middlesex, on the body of the deceased, only evidence of identification was taken; and owing to the mysterious nature of the case, and the suggestion that the deceased woman might have met her death by foul means, the Coroner adjourned the inquiry in order that a post-mortem examination might be made, and to give the police an opportunity of full inquiry into the facts of the case. These (a Correspondent writes) will, it is stated, be of a startling and sensational character, owing to the relations formerly existing between the dead woman and some gentleman of distinction.

Nelly Cook

MISSING.

Yesterday Mrs. Wynhedt, of 9, Benjamin-street, Clerkenwell, applied to the magistrate at Clerkenwell police-court for assistance in endeavouring to trace her husband, Charles Wynhedt. Her husband was a German, but spoke English well. On Wednesday he left his home, after dinner, to continue his business, which was selling various articles from place to place in London. Applicant gave the following description: - Age about 40; height 5ft. 7in.; dark brown hair, moustache and beard; close shaven cheeks; was wearing a black diagonal frock coat and vest, dark check trowsers, hard black felt hat, and spring-side boots.
An application was made to Mr. Chance at Lambeth police-court yesterday, by the father of Nelly Cook, aged 14, who had been missing from her home, 24, Wingford-road, Lyham-road, Brixton, since the 15th September. She was described as follows: - Height, 5ft. 2in.; dark brown hair, blue eyes; scar over right eyebrow. She was last seen near Hyde farm, Tooting Beck-common, and was then wearing a light cotton dress, long black cloth jacket, white sailor hat, trimmed with brown velvet, and low shoes.
Mrs. Chapman applied to the magistrate at Clerkenwell police-court, on Friday, for assistance in enabling her to discover what had become of her husband, who had been missing from his home since Monday, June 6. On the morning of that day he left home (70, Roman-road, Barnsbury) at a few minutes before nine to go to his business at Messrs. Hill's organ works, Cattle-market, Islington. He had not returned home since, and nothing could be heard of him. Applicant gave the following description of her husband: - Age, 28; height 5ft. 2in.; very fair, with light moustache and side whiskers, and very fair hair; grey eyes, was wearing a long black overcoat, round felt hat, short black diagonal coat, black waistcoat, striped trowsers; has a scar round the waist from a burn received in childhood.

Julia Kidger and Elizabeth Woollard

LOVE AND SUICIDE.

An extraordinary suicide, through a love affair, has just been discovered at Bowden, Leicestershire. It appears that Julia Kidger, aged 22, a farmer's daughter, visited Leicester, and wrote home saying she would be no more when they received it, in consequence of a love affair. After being missing twelve days, her lifeless body was found in the canal, with the portrait of her sweetheart on her bosom.

A GIRL LOST.

Mrs. Woollard, of 225, Caledonian-road, Islington, applied to Mr. Hannay, at Clerkenwell police-court, today, for help in discovering what had become of her daughter Elizabeth, who had unaccountably disappeared. On Tuesday last the girl left home at about four o'clock in the afternoon to go to a situation, only at the further end of the same road. Applicant was absent from home until Thursday, when she found a note from her daughter's employer, stating that the girl had not arrived, and asking that her box might be removed. - Applicant gave the following description of her daughter: - Age between 18 and 19; height about five feet; rather plump build, with round face; dark brown hair, and dark blue eyes; was wearing a dark blue dress, with small velvet cape, trimmed with black lace; black hat, trimmed with black and amber ribbon; small scar below the right ear.

Girl named Wall

Yesterday the body of a girl named Wall, who had been missing from her home at Whitton for several days, was found in a pond at Akenham, near Ipswich. She was 16 years of age, and a pupil at the Ipswich High School. She left the following, addressed to her mother: - "Just one word to say good-bye till we meet for ever in heaven. God give you strength to bear your trial as He has indeed given me." - Late last night the County Coroner stated that in consequence of the probable nature of the disclosures he should hold the inquiry with closed doors.

Mary Ellen Smith

A MISSING WOMAN FOUND.

Information was received at Dewsbury, on Wednesday, that Mary Ellen Smith, 23 years of age, married, who had been missing from her home since Sept. 29, had been found drowned in the Aire and Calder canal at Mill's Lock, Huddersfield.
