Cry Of Murder
The following newspaper article was translated from its original French.
In the inquiry into the death of Mary Janet Kelly, whose body was found Friday, 9th instant, at ten o'clock in the morning, horribly mutilated in a room of Miller Court, the owner of this unfortunate, who is also her neighbor , said he had seen his tenant later in the night of the murder, she was in the company of a man whom the witness gave a detailed description, adding that he would recognize if he saw again. A neighbor filed hearing a muffled cry "Murder!" at half past three or fifteen minutes to four Friday morning, but there was no significance attached as that cry was not uncommon in this area. On the other side Caroline Maxwell testified that she had seen the victim twice in the morning of Friday, between 8 and 9 o'clock, the second time in conversation with a man. Sarah Lewis said that she while sleeping with a friend at Miller Court, she heard about four o'clock in the morning of Friday a woman's voice shouting: "Murder!" but the sound had not been repeated, so she paid no further attention.
