Ripperology 2014 Year in Review: Victims
My highlight of the year has been Maybea researching Charles Pateman.Quote Mr. Hyde
Thank you, Mr. Hyde. This was the highlight of my research this year too:
The identification of the "City Missionary" from the Ripper news reports and posting the London City Mission package detailing the life of Charles Pateman.
A close second is the new research uncovering Mary Jane Kelly's association with the Salvation Army.

Re: Ripperology 2014 Year in Review: Victims
Charles Pateman was identified with the help of a marriage certificate of two residents of Thrawl Street from Valentines Day 1887. He is listed as a witness and curate.
Pateman was known to have 'rescued' women by getting them married, about 200. One of the ones he rescued he said was a friend of Mary Jane Kelly.
If MJK's friend was rescued through marriage, could this bride be her friend? Margaret Ellen Rawlinson had an aunt named Mary Jane Kelly.

That may well be my highlight of 2015.

Told them several years ago,but.....
She took them for her bottom lip.
Prolly given to her by Jack. After BS man left, obviously.
Acacia catechu has been used for thousands of years as an astringent.

Yep Canadian Gold Mine!
She does her research.Even travels to Britain to experience the settings.
Also well received in screenwriting circles.
It is mind numbing attempting to get screenwriters involved in the whole saga of the times and Jack and his victims.
Don't need to be told about structure by someone who has not looked at the story and found it to have the exact structure that film producers crave.
Time to work out who Jack the Ripper was......6-8 weeks.
Time dealing with screenwriters.....almost 7.5 years.Grrr!
Time free of Ripperologists....priceless!

Back to the Cachous and Liz.....well a bit before actually.....back to her "magic sixpence" and how she still had it after drinking gin, having pointed it out later.
Like Kate, she had money for booze late that afternoon.
Who do you think might have just missed an appointment with Kate around 8 pm and relayed her arrest details back to Flower and Dean Street!

Whom would you make the main character of your movie?
Your Ripper suspect?
A detective?
A victim?
Charles Pateman, the City Missionary?

Catherine Eddowes.
Her demise in Mitre Square will be my "shower scene from Psycho".
Quite funny when screenwriters tell me you can't do that!
When you look at the story,it is actually structured like a movie script.
Part 1 is from breakfast at the Mission Hall in August up to Kate's departure shortly after.
"Movie devices",like the pills being transferred from a broken prescription box to a scrap of envelope which are missed by Jack as there are actually two left,do not have to be manufactured for the story. He is of course looking for the box.Chapman has told him she has none left.
Bit of food for thought there.
Remember he attempted to take her head off.The pills were certainly for her TB.
Do not intend making the mistakes of the two previous efforts which were vehicles for Caine and Depp.

This is also the year that FX channel announced it would be making a From Hell series. There is word that it might be from the Ripper's perspective like the graphic novel.
I prefer crime stories where a journalist (or cartoonist like in Zodiac) is the protagonist. So a Stead or a Roslyn D'Onston would be great. Carl Kolchak is my favorite.

Have Kolchak,Riverboat and Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer on DVD.
Darren McGavin was prolly second only to James Garner in my household, when I was a kid.
Clint Eastwood would have been third thanks to Rawhide, although Mum was a Ward Bond fan.
I do want to give the Ripper's perspective. Most likely after Mary Ann Kelly's body was returned to Shoreditch.

Re: Ripperology 2014 Year in Review: Victims
Recent modernity rejects all things historic. Outside of WWII, not too many hit movies are historical.
Even the Titanic had to be framed in the present. So I think a Ripper movie should stay with the modern trend of 21st Century Ripper copycats and present-day lodger remakes.
As an example of the possibilities for Ripper story lines, here's a take that makes the search for Mary Jane Kelly into an Alternate Reality Game with Davinci Conspiracy overtones.

Gimmicks are also useful like in Time After Time. Bring the Ripper to the present day. If you don't, you have to make it a romantic epic like Titanic with the Ripper as the iceberg.

Thanks again for your input.
Intend telling the story straight up.
Cannot see a need for the Titanic,Little Big Man,Lone Ranger approach.
Believe me,it is an anti romantic story.
One of the many reasons so much time is being spent seeking a suitable screenwriter.
Ah! Now I see how Jack melted away into the shadows.....
