I have contacted The University of Manchester which holds the archives of The Owens College and received a prompt reply. Here is that reply:

Dear Karen Poulin,

Thank you for your enquiry. I can confirm that Alfred William Pearson attended Owens College in the 1878/9 session. He appears to have attended for only one year. His details were: born 8 Aug 1854, son of John Pearson, colliery and iron works proprietor, Golbourne Park, Newton le Willows, Lancs. It is also recorded that he was a former student of Trinity College, Cambridge (details from the Owens College matriculation register). There are no exam records for Pearson. Class attendance lists indicate he attended classes in engineering, chemistry and mechanical drawing. Unfortunately we have no other information on him. Hope this answers your query.
Yours sincerely,

James Peters
University Archivist
The John Rylands University Library, The University of Manchester.
