Bloody Earthen Pipe Found By Body

As has already been reported, the message has spread that Jack the Ripper has resumed his hideous handiwork, horror and consternation is felt throughout London. About one o'clock a policeman in Castle Alley, Whitechapel, found a female corpse that had been maimed in the usual manner, though with some exceptions, as the killer, it seemed, was disturbed in his hideous work. The victim belonged to the same class of unfortunates as the remaining seven. At about two o'clock the news reached Fleet Street, and most of the morning papers could therefore start recording, although details were still missing at this early hour, especially since the police refuse to give any information. The place where the murder was committed, is located approximately eight minutes distance from Leadenhall Street in the City, with a network of alleys and streets that the murderer had every opportunity to escape. The neighborhood is almost entirely filled with inexpensive homes of the very lowest rank, and the poor lighting in that part of London is shaded to conceal crime. Of course the site was soon filled with spectators, mostly women, in groups of three and four were whispering, and the miserable neighborhood looked even more miserable. A police inspector, to whom they turned to for information, intimated that three people were arrested, but, as we learned later, they were lacking any trace of the murderer and the prisoners had already been released again. One can not understand how the murderer escaped, as ten minutes before the body was found, a police officer went through the place and there was nothing there then. The outputs of Castle Alley were monitored, and the agents cordoned off all streets in the vicinity and no one was allowed through. It is said that in Scotland Yard some time ago several letters were received from Jack the Ripper, in which he announced that he would begin his work again in July. The doctors, who very soon after finding the corpse was investigating, did not hesitate to declare that the offender can be none other than the person who is notoriously known throughout the world as Jack the Ripper. Everywhere had been checked, and nothing was found. Special agents who were near to the scene of the murder committed there, had heard no cry. All houses in the neighborhood were examined but nothing suspicious was found. One person was taken into custody, who showed strange interest at the scene of the crime, and a butcher knife was found on him, but he was released. However, the police investigation into an exit point, included a blood-covered earthen pipe, found by the light of a lantern, where the body lay. They are convinced that the killer can not be far off, and was scared away, or the mutilation would have lasted even longer. No fewer than four police officers were still in the immediate vicinity of the place. So when the alarm was sounded after the discovery, officers were immediately at hand, and all persons who were around were looking in every nook and cranny.

Well this is indeed odd!! I just found the same article (posted above) in another Dutch newspaper entitled Algemeen Handelsblad, dated July 18, 1889. At the head of the article is the date that the London Correspondent had reported the death of Alice Mackenzie in Castle Alley as that of July 16. Now, we have long believed that Alice was killed in the early morning hours of the 17th of July. So, how could a Dutch newspaper be reporting her murder, with meticulous details, on the 16th of July in a newspaper sent out on the 18th of July? Very strange............
