It is said that Joseph Fleming, the man with which Joseph Barnett claimed that Mary had lived prior to meeting him, was described as a bootmaker or a shoemaker. I found a Joseph Fleming, bootmaker, living in South Shields in 1887. He may have moved to London at some point - who knows?
