Murder Committed by John Tumblety
Murder in Roscommon.
The report of a dastardly assault and murder of a man named Michael Madden, herd to Mr. Mathers, of Faltia, near Ballydangan, in this county, has just been brought in. It appears, says Saunders's correspondent, that Madden had been attending the petty sessions of Ballinasloe, and on his way home in the evening
was overtaken by a labourer named John Tumblety, lately in the same employment. Some altercation, it is alleged, took place, which was brought to a hasty conclusion by the latter rushing upon his opponent and stabbing him in so fearful a manner that he expired immediately afterwards. Tumblety then effected his
escape across the country, and has not since been heard of. Mr. Mathers is a Scotch gentleman, and the proprietor of a large tract of country purchased about eight years ago in the Landed Estates Court, but somehow he has not got on well with the people. He was fired at some time ago and narrowly escaped with
his life, and on more than one occasion has needed the surveillance of the police when making his occasional visits to the estate.
